Different Approaches to Batch Resizing

There is no "one size fits all" for image resizing. Depending on your project, you might need one of these four common approaches:

1. Same Size for All

This is the simplest method. Every image in your batch is forced to a specific dimension, such as 800x600. This is best when you know all your source images have the same aspect ratio (like all being landscape photos from the same camera).

2. Resize by Longest Edge

This is the "gold standard" for mixed galleries. If you have some portrait (vertical) photos and some landscape (horizontal) photos, you can tell the tool to make the longest side 1000 pixels. The software will automatically calculate the other side to keep the photo looking natural.

3. Percentage Reduction

If you just want everything to be "half as big," you can resize by percentage. This is useful when you want to save space but don't have a specific pixel target in mind.

4. Max Dimensions (Constrain)

You can set a "bounding box," for example, 1200x1200px. The tool will ensure no image is wider than 1200px and no image is taller than 1200px, while never stretching an image that is already smaller than the target.

The Golden Rule: Maintaining Aspect Ratio

The most important thing to remember when bulk resizing is aspect ratio. This is the relationship between the width and the height of your image. If you take a square photo and force it to be a wide rectangle, the image will look "squished" or distorted.

  • Stretch: The image is distorted to fit. Never choose this option.
